The Edison Middle School Jazz 1 band travelled to Purdue University to participate in the 17th annual Purdue Jazz Festival. The Edison Jazz 1 band has had the honor of participating in this event for the last couple of years and has enjoyed both success and the benefit of learning from professionals in jazz. Central High school has had bands competing in this event for the past few years.
More than 80 of the Midwest's top junior and senior high school big bands and combos competed during the festival. Competitions stretch throughout the day and were held in seven locations on Purdue's campus. Awards are given for each venue and consist of Honor Band, Outstanding Performance, and Judges' Award. The Honor Band being the highest award. Outstanding Soloist awards are also given for each venue. The Middle School bands and several High School bands competed in the North Ballroom.
The Edison Jazz 1 band was earned their venue's top award of "Honor Band". The Jazz 1 band last year also earned this honor. Additionally our own Tanner Goslin earned the Outstanding soloist award for the venue for his play on drums. The adjudicators handed out a number of very positive comments to the band in their review. Mentioning how impressed they were of Adam Hittle always being right on with his bass work, the other soloists doing an outstanding job on blending in wonderfully, and the whole band on how they listen to each other to keep all their sounds working with the band and adjusting when necessary. Congratulations to all and to Mike Lehman.
Central High School had three big bands and three combos compete in various venues and they also made Champaign very proud with the fantastic results they earned. The Central Combo #1 earning "Outstanding Performance" and Michael Anderson earning "Outstanding Soloist" with that group; With Combo #2- Nate Sokolski earned "Outstanding Solist"; the Central Stage Band earned "Honor Band" with Evan Slazinik earning "Outstanding Soloist"; the Central Jazz Ensemble earned "Honor Band" with Michael Anderson earning "Outstanding Soloist". Many of their performers as past performers for Edison and a big part of helping build the Edison program into such an outstanding Middle School band program. Congratulations to Central High School and Mr. Currey.
